About this FactMed analysis covering adverse side effect reports of ALENDRONATE SODIUM patients who developed ARTHRALGIA.

FactMed provides MD-approved analysis to help both patients, researchers, and physicians accurately assess the risk profile for more than 20,000 different pharmaceutical products. The below report offers compiled information from Food & Drug Administration and FactMed user submissions. Between January 2004 and October 2012, 1680 individuals taking ALENDRONATE SODIUM reported ARTHRALGIA to the FDA. A total of 15487 ALENDRONATE SODIUM drug adverse event reaction reports were made with the FDA during this time period. Often the FDA only receives reports of the most critical and severe cases; these numbers may therefore underrepresent the complication rate of the medication.

FDA Research Report

Introduction This page is designed to help you determine the relationship, if any, between ALENDRONATE SODIUM and ARTHRALGIA. In doing so, we compare ALENDRONATE SODIUM with other drugs that cause ARTHRALGIA, to help you evaluate whether or not ALENDRONATE SODIUM causes ARTHRALGIA. Likewise, this page shows the most highly-reported side effects of ALENDRONATE SODIUM, so you can see if ARTHRALGIA ranks among ALENDRONATE SODIUM's most well-known side effects.
Summary Statistics
Reports of ALENDRONATE SODIUM causing ARTHRALGIA: 1680

SPINAL MENINGEAL CYST
Been taking alendronate for 5 years. Recently experiencing severe leg pain. MRI shows cyst on my spine. Could there be. Correlation between this drug and the cyst? 2015-04-23 20:50:12
QUESTION
PSORIASIS
I started taking alendronate sodium 3 months ago. I have always had psoriasis on my hands and use a prescribed medication which keeps it under control. At the same time I started taking alendronate I devoloped an itchy rash that moved up my arms to the elbows and up my legs to the knees. There are white patches up my arms and legs where the psoriasis spread. My doctor prescribed the same cream for this rash as for my hands. It is not helping and the psoriasis on my hands is also worse and no longer healing. Do you think this psoriasis is a result of my taking alendronate? What can I take or do to heal this psoriasis? 2015-09-13 11:32:54

QUESTION
TINNITUS
I developed Tinnitis a few years ago. I also started taking Alendronate Sodium a few years ago. If I stop taking this drug will this Tinnitis go away? This ringing in my ears is terrible and I want so badly to get rid of it. Thank you for any help or suggestions you can make. 2016-05-14 00:50:56
QUESTION
MUSCULOSKELETAL STIFFNESS
I have been struggling with s great deal of stiffness for the past 9 months - during which time I have been taking genetic Fosamax. I have had multiple MRIs and been through physical therapy 6 weeks plus specialized massage therapy (myofascial release) essentially to no avail. I am a reasonably active 73 year old working a few part time jobs, also walk for exercise plus we travel. All with a certain amount of discomfort that no one can figure out. This week after taking my once weekly tablet my throat closed up. I was wheezing, am still coughing (day 3) plus my throat is sore and I am very hoarse. Something made me think of the Fosamax, Probably because I had just taken it 4 hours earlier. I do not plan to take another. I am hoping to make a full recovery by avoiding further dosages. Basically not a happy camper! 2016-06-16 22:31:06

QUESTION
ARTHRITIS
After being on Alendronate for 2 years, I have experienced the following: Increase in cavities and 2 broken teeth (previously crowned). Severe back pains that radiated to front. First one side, then the other, each taking about 3 to 4 weeks to resolve. Doctor said it was likely arthritis. After researching side affects, I decided to stop the alendronate. The excruciating back problems resolved. Now I am having severe pain and swelling in my feet. In the am when I rise, the pain is about a 12!! Eventually the pain lessons, but never goes away! I cannot wear any of my shoes!! Had ultrasound (DVT), blood work and x rays. Blood work showed a high level of inflammation (6.0). Dr couldn't explain cause, ordered pain meds, told to elevate and ice. Now I am reading that this medication has caused some people to get Rheumatoid arthritis!! This medicine is poison. I was reluctant to start it due to problems I read about. Doctor said, "You HAVE TO TAKE IT". She basically scared me into it. I am so, so sorry I ever took this stuff. Have others experienced all or some of these issues? 2016-09-15 12:24:07
QUESTION
OSTEOARTHRITIS
After being on Alendronate for over 5 years, I have experienced osteoarthritis, low calcium level, increased musculoskeletal pain, severe stomach pain, irregular heart beats, increase in blood pressure without diagnosis of hypertension, uncontrollable pulse rates, feeling tired most of the time, loss of hair, lower extremity cramps. I am told this comes from having taken Alendronate. Is this true? 2016-09-26 16:01:45
QUESTION
ANKLE DEFORMITY
I had been on Alendronate for three years. Facing dental surgery, I was told to get off of it for four months. I went off of it the last week in June, 2016 and the first week in July I experienced pain in my ankle joints to the point of which I could not walk ! It came out of nowhere. I am a housewife, retired, and not an athlete where this pain would be understandable . I do connect it too coming off of the Alendronate. Since July, 2016, I have been to my internist, rheumatoid arthritic Doctor, orthopedic doctor and now to a foot and ankle Doctor. I have been put on sulindac for approximately 6 weeks, prednisone for a month (where it helped my right ankle but not my left) and starting today I will be taking methylprednisolone. I have been fitted with an air cast and had an MR I done this past Saturday December 3,2016. I am at wits end with the pain. A searing pain in my ankle bone which is only relieved When I go to bed at night. I have also tried reflexology for six weeks with some relief but not sustaining relief. Wanted to tell my story since all the doctors I have seen told me it is not a reaction to getting off this med. I truly beg to differ. After seeing the postings on this site, gives me comfort in knowing similar symptoms have been experienced by others. Any suggestions please? 2016-12-05 08:27:21

QUESTION
OSTEOARTHRITIS
A few years ago, I took Actonel. I realized it was causing my joint pain and I also could not move my left leg. This cleared up a few months after being off of it. Now, years later, another doctor put me on Alendronate Sodium tablets (once a week) for osteoporosis. I have been going around to several doctors because something is wrong with my left knee and I walk with a limp. 3 doctors told me I have osteoarthritis. I'm just realizing that these forms of Fosamax are causing all my problems. I have gone off of this medication again and I am hoping that my osteoarthritis in my left knee will go away. It has been three weeks and it seems to be getting better. I have got to stay off of these drugs!! 2017-01-22 10:49:45
