About this FactMed analysis covering adverse side effect reports of WARFARIN SODIUM patients who developed myopathy.

FactMed provides MD-approved analysis to help both patients, researchers, and physicians accurately assess the risk profile for more than 20,000 different pharmaceutical products. The below report offers compiled information from Food & Drug Administration and FactMed user submissions. Between January 2004 and October 2012, 83 individuals taking WARFARIN SODIUM reported myopathy to the FDA. A total of 37324 WARFARIN SODIUM drug adverse event reaction reports were made with the FDA during this time period. Often the FDA only receives reports of the most critical and severe cases; these numbers may therefore underrepresent the complication rate of the medication.

FDA Research Report

Introduction This page is designed to help you determine the relationship, if any, between WARFARIN SODIUM and myopathy. In doing so, we compare WARFARIN SODIUM with other drugs that cause myopathy, to help you evaluate whether or not WARFARIN SODIUM causes myopathy. Likewise, this page shows the most highly-reported side effects of WARFARIN SODIUM, so you can see if myopathy ranks among WARFARIN SODIUM's most well-known side effects.
Summary Statistics
Reports of WARFARIN SODIUM causing myopathy: 83
Reports of any side effect of WARFARIN SODIUM : 37324
Percentage of WARFARIN SODIUM patients where myopathy is a reported side effect: 0.2224%

FDA reports of any drug causing myopathy : 3605

QUESTION
PHRENIC NERVE PARALYSIS
I have phenic nerve damage which I am convinced was caused by use of Warfarin Sodium: I was due to have an ablation for atrial fibrilation and was put on warfarin to reduce my clotting capability. Warfarin did not work that well at thinning my blood - the target for the operation was 2.5 - when I started my blood was 1.0 and the highest it went to was 1.4 (had to cancel operation date on one occasion ) at one time I was taking high doses 8 1/2 mg daily but to no avail. Then I started to get a real bad pain in my shoulder blade and neck, it was excruciating - I tried every thing pain killers/ cranial osteopaths/massage but nothing worked. Then I looked on the internet and found a report of pain in neck and back caused by warfarin. The person who wrote it like me thought it was a sports injury, but when he stopped Warfarin the pain stopped within 24 hrs. I decided to stop the Warfarin and it was like a miracle the pain dissapeared within 16 hours. I started taking a different drug to thin my blood - Dabigatran and it worked fine. Just before my ablation I had to attend hospital for a different reason and I had a chest Xray where they found I had left HemiDiaphragm elevation. This was investigated as an outpatient and the consultant told me I had Phrenic Nerve damage! He also commented that it was very unusual because nearly all of his patients, who had Phrenic nerve damage - had it as a result of the ablation surgery. I then put to him that as most of his patients had not had a chest xray prior to the operation, that the damage could have been caused by the Warfarin, but only discovered after the operation and thus attributed to that operation. Is there anyone out there that knows more about the physiology of how this drug may have caused this damage? High doses of Warfarin definetely cause my phrenic nerve and it should be investigated!
