About this FactMed analysis covering adverse side effect reports of DOXYCYCLINE patients who developed ACHLORHYDRIA.

FactMed provides MD-approved analysis to help both patients, researchers, and physicians accurately assess the risk profile for more than 20,000 different pharmaceutical products. The below report offers compiled information from Food & Drug Administration and FactMed user submissions. Between January 2004 and October 2012, 5 individuals taking DOXYCYCLINE reported ACHLORHYDRIA to the FDA. A total of 7856 DOXYCYCLINE drug adverse event reaction reports were made with the FDA during this time period. Often the FDA only receives reports of the most critical and severe cases; these numbers may therefore underrepresent the complication rate of the medication.

FDA Research Report

Introduction This page is designed to help you determine the relationship, if any, between DOXYCYCLINE and ACHLORHYDRIA. In doing so, we compare DOXYCYCLINE with other drugs that cause ACHLORHYDRIA, to help you evaluate whether or not DOXYCYCLINE causes ACHLORHYDRIA. Likewise, this page shows the most highly-reported side effects of DOXYCYCLINE, so you can see if ACHLORHYDRIA ranks among DOXYCYCLINE's most well-known side effects.
Summary Statistics
Reports of DOXYCYCLINE causing ACHLORHYDRIA: 5
Reports of any side effect of DOXYCYCLINE : 7856
Percentage of DOXYCYCLINE patients where ACHLORHYDRIA is a reported side effect: 0.0636%

FDA reports of any drug causing ACHLORHYDRIA : 27
Average percentage for all medicated patients where ACHLORHYDRIA is reported as a complication: 0.0002%

CONCERN
VITILIGO
I've been taking Doxycycline for about 10 months now. My dermatologist prescribed it to me to fight my acne. About two months ago, I noticed a few small patches of white hair on my beard. The two larger patches were near my mouth and on my right cheek. I just thought it was a sign of aging. About a month later, I shaved my beard and cut my hair. A week later, after looking at pictures taken of me during a recent trip, I noticed a few patches of paler skin on my face. I immediately went to the mirror and inspected my face. Sure enough, there were a few white patches. The most noticeable is on my forehead, near my hairline. The hair in that area is white now. Where the white hair was growing on my beard, that skin is white too. I'm pretty sure I have vitiligo and I'm pretty sure it's caused by the doxycycline. Awaiting to hear back from my dermatologist. If it's of any help - I'm a 28 year old male, and I'm Caucasian, Asian, and Pacific Islander. 2015-06-24 04:04:42

QUESTION
ACUTE PSYCHOSIS
This isn't a question. It's a statement that Doxycycline definitely made me pyschotic and paranoid by the end of 14 days. And even though I had read up on the side effects before and knew this might happen, it didn't really help. I was just about ready to get a divorce by day 14! It did cure my infection but it was really rough going. I would get rages which is totally out of character for me. Patient beware! 2015-12-13 12:26:00

INSULIN RESISTANCE
Type 1 diabetic with cystic fibrosis and asthma. I was prescribed 100mg Doxycycline twice daily for chronic lung infection - maitenance dose - and have been on it now for 10 months without hospitalization. However I do notice a huge increase in insulin resistance. I'm now doing double the insulin that I needed at the same time prior to starting the doxy. Nothing else has changed in terms of diet or activity levels to account for this. Stopping doxycycline and starting cephelexin for a 2 week dose saw a sharp increase in insulin sensitivity. Resuming doxycycline predictably saw the insulin resistance return. I gather this isnt a typical reaction? And nothing short of stopping the doxycycline will correct it? 2016-07-01 13:28:21

QUESTION
TENDON RUPTURE
I have been taking doxycycline for 6 months because I was diagnosed with Q fever. I have a large lump on my tendon by my ankle. My doctor said that doxy would not cause this but I got it after taking the doxy for about one month. Q fever is very serious and can cause heart problems, liver and even death and it can take up to 15 months to cure. I go for blood tests to check the antibodies but I feel fine, a little tired sometimes but I wonder if that is the Q fever or the doxyclycline? Also would like you to know that one pharmacy buys the doxy from a different lab and one makes me sick to my stomach and the other one I tolerate much better. The pharmacist told me that there are different fillers and that makes a difference. 2016-10-21 07:17:34

QUESTION
INSULIN RESISTANCE
Greetings, I am a scientist on the ketogenic diet that is very relevant to your research. Since I measure beta hydroxybutyrate (blood strips) and also urine ketone strips for the level of my ketosis, I found that the moment I took Doxycycline I was kicked out of ketosis. Then about 6-8 hours later my ketosis starts to return and the moment I take thenext dose of the Doxycycline I am out of ketosis again. This confirms (as a 1-person study) that Doxycycline is using insulin receptors. That is because it backs the glucose up that the liver puts into the blood for the parts of the brain that need glucose (corneas and iris I believe). When that much glucose is in the blood, and insulin is taken up by something else, beta hydroxybutyrate and ketones are dumped (in a healthy body) immediately. When a medicine uses the insulin, my urine suddenly shows ketones at near keto acidosis level and the blood test shows I am not in ketosis. If my insulin receptors are tied up with the drug, my glucose waits in the blood until it can be picked up. Prednisone caused the biggest increase so far in glucose backing up to 180 mmol/L using a Bayer Contour measuring device!! In ketosis my blood sugar is between 62 to 90--it may go to 110 after a heavy workout while fasting--that is all from glycogen from the liver. In nutritional ketosis having blood sugar in the 60s is normal. I believe that my finding, though only one person's findings, can help you understand the pharmacology behind why Doxycycline may cause insulin sensitivity and confirms that it does if taken long enough and/or often. URINARY RETENTION
Doxy for Lyme disease. With a few days, dizziness and fainting, reduced dose to at night, more likely the result of Herxheimer Major urinary retention. I stopped for a week, and normal flow returned. Went back on, again major retention meaning I can void with a light stream of 50 cc while needing to cath the remaining. It does cause hunger & weight gain, and the bloating as a result of the retention. 2017-01-18 08:40:49

Shortly after starting doxycyline for lyme disease, my left ankle became slightly tender...3 weeks later and by the end of each day it was swelling up so that I no longer had an ankle. Orthopedic doctor said it's Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction and I have to wear a boot for 4-6 weeks to rest the tendon and keep my arch from falling. BRAIN DAMAGE
Hi , I took Doxycycline for almost three months with little or no side effects. Upon almost the last dose, which I ate with hot spicy food, I had severe effects. My vision was terribly distorted, I had vertigo and motion sickness to the point of mental anguish. I had no muscle control in my legs and my blood pressure rose to dangerous levels. This occurred for hours until finally ER was called and I was taking in and spend the night. Nothing was found on the cat scan nor did the EKG show any problems with my heart. Nothing in my bloodwork to indicate other problems. The effects lessened considerable over about 20 hours but continued to subtly for days. I was unable to drive effectively, I misstated my birth date, I could not recall my phone number days later (not right away). Is there any explanation for this? 2017-05-11 12:28:46
