About this FactMed analysis covering adverse side effect reports of METOCLOPRAMIDE patients who developed AKINESIA.

FactMed provides MD-approved analysis to help both patients, researchers, and physicians accurately assess the risk profile for more than 20,000 different pharmaceutical products. The below report offers compiled information from Food & Drug Administration and FactMed user submissions. Between January 2004 and October 2012, 4 individuals taking METOCLOPRAMIDE reported AKINESIA to the FDA. A total of 34909 METOCLOPRAMIDE drug adverse event reaction reports were made with the FDA during this time period. Often the FDA only receives reports of the most critical and severe cases; these numbers may therefore underrepresent the complication rate of the medication.

FDA Research Report

Introduction This page is designed to help you determine the relationship, if any, between METOCLOPRAMIDE and AKINESIA. In doing so, we compare METOCLOPRAMIDE with other drugs that cause AKINESIA, to help you evaluate whether or not METOCLOPRAMIDE causes AKINESIA. Likewise, this page shows the most highly-reported side effects of METOCLOPRAMIDE, so you can see if AKINESIA ranks among METOCLOPRAMIDE's most well-known side effects.
Summary Statistics
Reports of METOCLOPRAMIDE causing AKINESIA: 4
Reports of any side effect of METOCLOPRAMIDE : 34909
Percentage of METOCLOPRAMIDE patients where AKINESIA is a reported side effect: 0.0115%

FDA reports of any drug causing AKINESIA : 753
Average percentage for all medicated patients where AKINESIA is reported as a complication: 0.0047%

QUESTION
BILE DUCT OBSTRUCTION
I took metoclopramide, whilst pregnant, for about 12 weeks due to severe vomiting (hyperemesis gravidarum). My child had difficulty talking, intact he couldn't talk, and required thousands of hours of speech therapy to teach him where to put his tongue in order to learn how to speak. On top of this, he has always had pale stools. It is something I have been concerned about since he was about two, maybe before then. The other day he had a diarrhoea and vomiting bug and his stools turned completely white. Coupled with him always having had pale stools, do you think metoclopramide could be a contributory factor in this - maybe a bile duct obstruction. How can I get my GP to refer me to a specialist for MRI scanning for my son? It would put my mind at rest. (I am in the UK) 2015-12-23 05:02:54

QUESTION
BREAST CANCER FEMALE
Between 2004-2009, I was on Metaclopromide for gastro intestinal problems. I was never told it should only be used for a short amount of time. After about 2 years of continuing the drug, I developed many health concerns, without explanation; weight gain, adult acne, depression, severe sleep disruption, irregular menstration, and I was not pregnant, but lactating from my left breast. My husband and I were trying for another baby, but after two years of trying, we had no results and I was still experiencing these horrible symptoms. My gynecologist sent me to a reproductive specialist, who immediately dismissed the idea of the med causing my symptoms. My prolactin levels were 109 (normal is 6-23), and they assumed I had a pituitary tumor. When they started talking surgery, I started researching for myself and found that Metaclopromide could cause all of my symptoms. I discussed with my GI and pharmacist, and went off the drug. Within 4 weeks, my symptoms had started to disappear and I was pregnant. Now, 7 years after my son was born, I am diagnosed with Ductal carcinoma in situ, in the breast that I was lactating from. I am under the impression that the drug may have caused my cancer, but the doctors wave it off as if that is a silly suggestion. I wish there was a way to know. Please advise. 2016-07-27 22:06:33
