About this FactMed analysis covering adverse side effect reports of PRILOSEC patients who developed ACHLORHYDRIA.

FactMed provides MD-approved analysis to help both patients, researchers, and physicians accurately assess the risk profile for more than 20,000 different pharmaceutical products. The below report offers compiled information from Food & Drug Administration and FactMed user submissions. Between January 2004 and October 2012, 1 individuals taking PRILOSEC reported ACHLORHYDRIA to the FDA. A total of 34607 PRILOSEC drug adverse event reaction reports were made with the FDA during this time period. Often the FDA only receives reports of the most critical and severe cases; these numbers may therefore underrepresent the complication rate of the medication.

QUESTION
ATRIAL FIBRILLATION
When I was in my 30s the afib started and went to doctor and he gave me zantac which stopped the afib in three to four days then I would stop the zantac and was good again for a few months. They always felt like it was my stomach and did a upper GI which showed nothing wrong. Years later the afib is worse. Now I'm 61 and have been to the emergecy twice. Had tests done and echo, and stress test and they say heart is fine. I was back on zantac twice a day and a beta blocker. Then it started I could not eat, if I did the afib would kick in a few minutes after that. So then the doctor put me on prilosec and that did help and I could eat again. But once and awhile it will still start in. It seems to me if I eat white bread or anything smoked it brings it on. Went to doctor last Monday, he increased the beta blocker Sotalol from 80mg to 120mg hoping this will help. The next morning got out of bed and it kicked in and lasted 10 hours. Do not want to travel to far from home, mite not be able to make it back. One emergency room doctor told me to see a chiropractor and I tried that for a few months, that did not work unless he wasn't the right chiropractor. Been thinking of trying a different one. Also it seems like if I move certain ways it causes the heart to miss. The doctor did say that if the increase of Sotalol does not work that hes looking at ablation. Does anyone know of any side affects later on from ablation? 2014-11-19 09:10:10

MULTIPLE MYELOMA
I am not sure I understand the conclusion here. Does Prilosec cause multiple myeloma or does it not? 2014-12-06 01:22:04
QUESTION
OSTEOMALACIA
I am (or was) a healthy 64 y/o female who had been taking Prilosec OTC for at least 7 years, non-stop, because of also taking an arthritis drug, Etodolac; I was encouraged to take the Prilosec to prevent stomach distress. Fast forward 7 years ago to last month when I had to have my right hip replaced. My surgeon, upon getting inside and trying to put the 'sleeve' into my pelvic area, discovered my bones were 'soft' (his term) and had a heck of a time (grinding out the soft area, resulting in blood loss of 2 pints) in order to get into a good area. Now, both he (surgeon) and my family doctor have never mentioned this condition osteomalacia; only my family doctor said thin bones could be caused by the Prilosec use. I am very, very worried right now. I have been for years taking calcium citrate along with Vitamin D (400 units) along with other supplements (multi, fish oil, B complex). No one seems concerned at my concern. I am scheduled for another bone density test in two weeks (one in 2010 showed osteopenia).....Should I seek some other doctor, perhaps a rheumatologist? I really need some guidance here. 2015-02-16 19:18:01

DEAFNESS
I love this song! From the first time I heard it as an adult it made me think about my future child. As I lietensd to that amazing version I realized that I have wanted kids for much longer than I thought. I recently had a failed IVF transfer (found out yesterday). Thanks for reminding me not to give up. One day I'll play this song for my child as well. 2015-07-13 13:12:46
CONCERN
ATRIAL FIBRILLATION
On the advice of his regular doctor and a gastroenterologist, my husband has been on Omeprazole on and off for 2-1/2 years for acid reflux. During that time, he developed intermittent afib. After some experimenting (with the doctors' encouragement) by removing and adding things into his diet/vitamins/medicines, he has concluded that Omeprazole is causing his afib. He can do every other thing that's considered a trigger for afib without no issues, but just a few weeks of taking Omeprazole daily causes afib to plague him. The longer he takes the Omeprazole, the worse the afib gets--sometimes with instances lasting days at a time before converting back to a normal rhythm and then going right back into afib again a short time later. Six weeks ago, he stopped taking everything but Omeprazole, and the afib was completely out of control for three weeks. Then he stopped taking Omeprazole, and after a few days, he converted back to a normal rhythm and has stayed there. For the last two weeks, he's been drinking a lot of coffee because he was told that's a trigger. Nothing. He was told that alcohol triggers it, so he got drunk a couple of times. Nothing. He also found that Omeprazole causes him to gain weight. No matter how much he exercises or how little he eats, he packs on pounds while on it. He can easily gain 10 pounds in a month. This is a catch 22 because his weight is partly what causes the acid reflux, which is why he was told to take Omeprazole in the first place. And then the aspirin that he was told to take because of the afib made the acid reflux worse, so he was told to take a higher dosage of Omeprazole. And that made the afib worse. It's a vicious circle. 2015-09-21 10:04:22
QUESTION
WHEEZING
I had acid reflux since 1,5 years ago. went to GI and was diagnozed as mild acid reflux. I was prescribed Dexilant and after taking about couple days I started having rash all over my hands and arms so I stopped. I went to our local library and start doing my own research and decided to do it naturally by changing my diet and lifestyle. It worked ! My heartburn start to dissapear and I got my notmal life back. It came back only when I ate after 9pm or going back to 'bad' diet which trigger the acid reflux. However I started to be concern when my throat felt uncomfortable on and off. So I went to an ENT and was told that my throat was fine nothing to be worried, the doc found out that the acid went up to my throat which caused the irritability. He advised me to take PRILOSEC 20.6 mg for 6 weeks. So I started taking PRILOSEC 20.6mg on Sunday morning. I noticed that I started wheezing and my heartburn came back. The wheezing continued on and off and heartburn got worse. So I decided to search more info about the connection of wheezing and Prilosec and found this site. I'm so confused. SEROTONIN SYNDROME
My doctor gave me prilosec when they thought i might have heartburn. A couple days later i had what appeared to be a seizure when my sugar fell to 70. A couple weeks later my neck started jerking to one side. That was 5 years ago and it still jerks. I have since discovered that this largely happens when the right side of my neck is compressed. Neurologists have suggested spasmodic tortocollis. Via my own research I am wondering if the prilosec triggered it via serotonin toxicity. I need a diagnosis to hopefully get the right treatment. The daily jerking is involuntary, embarassing and painful. 2015-10-17 07:24:37
CONCERN
LYMPHOMA
I just want to add my name to the list of people who have taken Prilosec for many years and was diagnosed with Lymphoma four years ago. I have a very large hiatal hernia which caused unrelenting acid reflux and didn't feel I had a choice. I have to wonder why the advice on Prilosec is to take it only for a very short time--leading one to believe that long term use can have a negative effect on the body. My use of other prescriptions has always been very minimal--except for Prilosec. 2015-12-01 12:42:42
QUESTION
SMALL INTESTINAL OBSTRUCTION
I took Prilosec for two weeks, I started getting severe right abdominal pain on the 12-13th day. I called my doctor and he wanted me to take a "different new Prilosec" which I did and after ONE dose was in even more pain. I stopped the medication. These symptoms continued off and on from the end of Feb.2015 until I was finally diagnosed with a small bowel stricture in Dec. 2015. I had questioned the doctor about Prilosec being the culprit but he said no, that I was caused from taking Non-steroidal medications. I have not taken any for many years as I have an esophageal stricture and was told to never take any, which I haven't. Now I am finding Prilosec may have caused this issue and am furious as I didn't want to take it in the first place. I would now like to know if surgery is my only option. ATRIAL FIBRILLATION
After visiting my gastroenterologist for acid reflux, I received a prescription for Omeprazole. In the medical screening, my blood pressure was 120/92 with a pulse of 72. After taking one tablet of Omeprazole, my heart rate jumped to 150 BPM and my heart went into AFIB. I discontinued the Omeprazole after 2 days. The heart rate did not return to normal and I was hospitalized for 6 days in the ICU. I have had two cardiac conversions which resulted in my heart returing to normal rhythm. The doctor does not believe their is a correlation. I disagree. 2016-02-12 12:23:05
