About this FactMed analysis covering adverse side effect reports of SPIRIVA patients who developed ACHLORHYDRIA.

FactMed provides MD-approved analysis to help both patients, researchers, and physicians accurately assess the risk profile for more than 20,000 different pharmaceutical products. The below report offers compiled information from Food & Drug Administration and FactMed user submissions. Between January 2004 and October 2012, 2 individuals taking SPIRIVA reported ACHLORHYDRIA to the FDA. A total of 55288 SPIRIVA drug adverse event reaction reports were made with the FDA during this time period. Often the FDA only receives reports of the most critical and severe cases; these numbers may therefore underrepresent the complication rate of the medication.

FDA Research Report

Introduction This page is designed to help you determine the relationship, if any, between SPIRIVA and ACHLORHYDRIA. In doing so, we compare SPIRIVA with other drugs that cause ACHLORHYDRIA, to help you evaluate whether or not SPIRIVA causes ACHLORHYDRIA. Likewise, this page shows the most highly-reported side effects of SPIRIVA, so you can see if ACHLORHYDRIA ranks among SPIRIVA's most well-known side effects.
Summary Statistics
Reports of SPIRIVA causing ACHLORHYDRIA: 2
Reports of any side effect of SPIRIVA : 55288
Percentage of SPIRIVA patients where ACHLORHYDRIA is a reported side effect: 0.0036%

FDA reports of any drug causing ACHLORHYDRIA : 27
Average percentage for all medicated patients where ACHLORHYDRIA is reported as a complication: 0.0002%

QUESTION
GOUT
I'm confused with presented report. It shows that percentage of SPIRIVA patients who reported GOUT as a side effect is 0.1320%. At the same time percentage of physicians who highly suspect gout is 56%... I understand these figures have no direct link but such a high suspicion of physicians should have some solid reason. I have elevated uric acid and long list of hypertension medications (including 2 diuretics). Thus my gout history is long as well. The flares occur irregularly with severity levels ranging from 3 to 9 of 10. The last one was 1 month ago. After taking a single first dose of SPIRAVIA I have had a gout attack 24 hours later (6/10 severity). Could SPIRAVIA cause that? 2016-08-11 18:04:48

DEMENTIA
My pulmonologist has had me using Spiriva for several years. I've just learned there may be a connection to dementia. I'm 73 and have noticed some of the occasional and common memory - what's that word/what did I come in here to get - issues lately. I do need an inhaler for my moderately severe copd but I also worry about dementia so I feel caught between the devil and the deep blue sea. What other than the Anticholinergic inhalers like Spiriva could I take? Thanks 2017-07-12 09:45:10
